A Memorable Visit to St. Cornelius CES During Bullying Prevention Week

Today’s presentation took place during Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week at St. Cornelius Catholic Elementary School, a time dedicated to fostering empathy, resilience, and community within our schools.

Upon arrival, my team and I were warmly greeted by Principal Mr. Saragosa, whose welcome set a tone of kindness and collaboration. In the gymnasium, Mr. La Rosa, a dedicated Grade 7 teacher, had everything beautifully prepared for the presentation and generously supported with logistics, ensuring the technology ran seamlessly and the environment felt inviting. Mr. Peter, the custodian, contributed by arranging seating and adjusting the lights, completing the setup with attentive care.

Soon, the gym filled with energy as approximately 480 students arrived class by class, from FDK through Grade 8. I greeted them as they entered, offering words of welcome that set a positive tone. Their attentiveness and respect created an atmosphere that was both uplifting and inspiring.

Principal Saragosa gave a thoughtful introduction that set the stage for me to share my story and messages. The students listened attentively and later asked meaningful questions. With care, Mr. Saragosa facilitated the Q&A, inviting students to state their names before posing their questions, which fostered a respectful and engaging dialogue. At the close of the session, I presented my recently published book to him for the school library, which he graciously received with appreciation.

After the presentation, teachers stopped by to share their appreciation, including Ms. DiPassio, FDK teacher, and Ms. Zekulin, the DPCDSB braillist. In the hallway, I met more staff who offered warm feedback, among them Ms. Farruggio, who expressed gratitude for the impact the session had on the students.

While waiting in the main foyer, students dropped off their exit tickets, greeting me with smiles, questions, and kind words. A group of Grade 7 and 8 students, enjoying free time with their teacher, showed remarkable curiosity and friendliness. I also met Vice Principal Ms. Metivier, who shared encouraging words, and Ms. Burt, the secretary, who extended her kindness as well.

Before leaving, I exchanged goodbyes with Principal Mr. Saragosa, expressing my appreciation for his kind invitation to speak to his students, and with Vice Principal Ms. Metivier, whose friendly and kind presence added to the welcoming atmosphere of the day. As dismissal began, I was met once more by the warmth of the students I had spoken to, and their cheerful smiles were a highlight of the afternoon.

As the final bell rang and buses lined up outside, I walked to the car surrounded by the joyful energy of students heading home. Their waves and smiles were a vivid reminder of why these conversations matter—because every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and empowered. Reflecting on the afternoon, I was struck by the attentiveness of the students, the thoughtful questions they asked, and the genuine support from teachers and staff. This was more than a presentation; it was a collective stand against bullying and a celebration of community. Bullying Prevention Week is not only about awareness—it is about nurturing a culture of empathy and resilience that grows each day through small acts of kindness.
