A Day of Inspiration at St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School
There’s something magical about the energy of a school when anticipation fills the air — and at St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School, that magic was unmistakable. My team and I arrived at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 8th, 2026, to help with the setup for the 1:30 presentation, and from the moment we stepped out of the vehicle, we were met with warmth. Staff members passing by greeted us with genuine kindness, setting the tone for the afternoon ahead.
Ms. Robinson, the vice principal, came out personally to welcome us, making sure we felt at home right away. After signing in at the school office, Principal Mr. Busby greeted us with a smile and shared that the morning assembly had already sparked excitement among students about my visit as their special guest speaker.
Inside the gymnasium — a vast space prepared to host 700 students from kindergarten to grade eight — both Mr. Busby and Ms. Robinson offered thoughtful guidance as my team tested the audiovisual setup. Once everything was ready, classes were called down one grade at a time, from grade eight to kindergarten. Slowly, the gym filled with bright, curious faces, each student settling in with attentiveness and enthusiasm.
As I greeted students on their way in, the atmosphere shifted from anticipation to genuine connection. Before I began my presentation, two students, Abby and Amy, delivered a beautiful introduction that set the perfect tone.
Throughout my presentation, the students remained fully engaged. Their focus, their reactions, and their willingness to reflect made the experience deeply meaningful. The Q&A session that followed was a highlight — their questions were thoughtful, heartfelt, and sincere, revealing not only curiosity but a true desire to understand.
After the presentation, I donated a copy of my recently published book to the school, which Mr. Busby accepted with gratitude. We then gathered for a joyful group photo with the school’s iDARE team (Inclusion, Diversity, Anti‑Racism, Equity) — about 50 incredible students whose smiles captured the spirit of the day.
As we packed up and walked through the hallway, I was met with a chorus of kind hellos from students as they exited their classrooms at the end of the school day. Their smiles and excitement were contagious. Along the way, I also came across many thoughtful teachers who stopped to share how much they enjoyed the presentation, which meant so much to me. I even had the joy of taking photos with Ms. Ellis, Ms. Lopez, and Ms. De Freitas — a lovely and unexpected highlight of the afternoon.
Before leaving, I expressed my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Busby and Ms. Robinson for inviting me to speak to their entire school community. We ended the visit with a few final photos at the front entrance, standing before the blessed St. Brigid statue — a fitting close to a day rooted in connection, inspiration, and community spirit.
My experience at St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School was a powerful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together with openness and positivity. I’m deeply grateful that my visit sparked curiosity and left a meaningful impression on both students and staff, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Busby and Ms. Robinson for inviting me to present to all their students and for welcoming my team and me with such genuine warmth.
The students’ exit tickets were a powerful reflection of the impact of the day. Their words revealed deep empathy, curiosity, and a genuine desire to understand disability, inclusion, and resilience. Many shared how the presentation inspired them to be kinder, more grateful, and more aware of the challenges others face. Others expressed heartfelt questions about my daily life, my technology, and how I stay positive. Their reflections were thoughtful, sincere, and often profoundly moving — a true testament to the openness and compassion within the St. Brigid school community.
